James, Son of Zebedee

February 12, 2016

Matthew 4:21
And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

James, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, was also a fisherman like Andrew and Peter. He had a rough temperament and history tells us that fishermen were of the lower class of people in that day. He and his brother, John were called “sons of thunder”. He also left his occupation immediately and followed Jesus.

He became one of the disciples that was closest to Jesus and was present at some of the miracles that many of the other disciples did not see.

He preached boldly and was outspoken and was beheaded by Herod. James was the first of the 12 to be martyred.

Andrew, Fisherman

February 11, 2016

Andrew was  a disciple of John the Baptist before he was a disciple of Jesus. Andrew, like his brother Peter, was a fisherman by trade, meaning that he was an outdoorsman and must have been very physically fit. He was exposed to the conditions and had learned a trade that was also physically demanding.
Andrew and Simon were called by Jesus when they were fishing. They left their nets and followed Him leaving everything behind.

Andrew brought others to Christ, his brother Peter before Jesus made them disciples and the the little boy who had five loaves and two fishes.

Andrew was a great example of what we should be as followers of Jesus.

John 1:40  One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
