When the Church Hurts

I saw this quote and thought it was worth sharing:

“If being hurt by the church causes you to lose faith in God, then your faith was in people, not God.” — A. W. Tozer

Sadly, sometimes we are hurt by people in the church. A pastor, a leader, a friend, or another Christian may disappoint us. Words can hurt, promises can be broken, and sometimes people simply fail us.

But people are not God.

Our faith should never rest in a person, a church, or an organization. People—even good Christian people—are imperfect. Jesus Christ never changes. He is always faithful, always loving, and always worthy of our trust.

When someone in the church hurts you, don’t allow that hurt to draw you away from the Lord. Instead, draw closer to Him. Forgive when forgiveness is needed, pray for those who have hurt you, and keep your eyes on Jesus.

Our relationship with God is not based on how other Christians behave. It is based on who He is.

Hebrews 12:2 KJV
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…”

Keep looking to Jesus. People may disappoint us, but Jesus never will.
